The Hardest Part About Digital Marketing

After a decade in digital marketing, I’ve worn almost every hat in the building. Social media, content strategy, PPC, SEO, analytics, conversion rate optimization - you name it, I’ve tackled it. At one point, I was managing the entire digital marketing presence for two Holiday Inn properties.

When you first enter this industry, it sparks an undeniable, addictive curiosity. There is so much terrain to cover that you want to test everything just to see where your personal strengths lie and what resonates most. It’s equal parts chaotic and experimental. But once you settle into a niche, the real scramble begins: trying to absorb information fast enough to work autonomously, navigating corporate red tape, and handling tough client feedback.

Then come the unexpected curveballs. Take public speaking, for instance. If you’ve ever felt those Sunday-night butterflies over a dreaded Monday speech, multiply that feeling by ten. In digital marketing, you end up presenting far more often than you ever bargained for - often on short notice. If you weren't the theatrical kid in school, learning to command a room while simultaneously mastering technical strategy on the job is a trial by fire.

Difficult? Absolutely. But still not the hardest part.

What about high-stakes execution mistakes? Few things trigger immediate panic quite like making live updates inside a client’s CMS when you aren't a full-stack developer. You push an edit, the front-end breaks, or worse, you accidentally delete a crucial page. Fixing it under pressure is a nightmare.

Terrifying, yes. But still not the hardest part.

What about stepping into leadership? Stepping up to train juniors and interns is deeply rewarding, but it brings a new layer of stress - their output directly reflects on your reputation. Combine that with managing high-stakes accounts where massive budgets are on the line, and the pressure is constant.

Yet, even that pales in comparison to the real contender…

What then is the hardest part about digital marketing?

The absolute hardest part of digital marketing is staying up to date. It is, by far, the most demanding aspect of the discipline, requiring relentless effort. You cannot fake it, and you cannot win by sprinting for a week or two every quarter. The landscape shifts beneath your feet daily. You have to continuously track algorithm updates, new tech, and changing consumer behaviors, and then immediately figure out how to translate those shifts into actionable value for your clients. This is precisely why digital marketing isn't for everyone. Success hinges on perpetual curiosity. In this industry, the moment you let complacency set in, it rapidly reveals itself as incompetence.
